Fourth telco airwave auction to be held as early as October, says IDA

SINGAPORE - An airwave auction to determine Singapore's fourth mobile operator will take place as early as October, according to final auction rules published yesterday by the authorities.

Sept 1 has been set as the date for any potential new entrants to submit their application forms, including documents to show they have enough funds. The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) will take 20 days to look through the documents, and provide one week of training to the potential bidders on how to use the computerised auction system.

If all goes well, the auction will take place in early October, and the fourth telco could be rolling out its services as early as April next year (2017).

Does anyone have any views on Singtel/Starhub/M1?

M1 price is now quite low while Starhub is trading at a very high PE right now and Singtel price looks high. Thinking of accumulating abit of M1.

HetNet will allow M1's customers to surf, without disruption, at high speeds with a peak download speed of more than 1 Gbps by 2017. This is up sharply from the current peak speed of 450Mbps.

Separately, M1 and Nokia also announced on Friday a strategic partnership to roll out a nationwide commercial narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network by the first half of 2017.

M1 will invest more than S$50 million towards the two networks.

Reviewing VPN concerns

irtual private network (VPN) has been a contentious piece of technology here for years.

Content publishers are unhappy that consumers here use the technology to access blocked content meant for overseas markets, even though many paid for the content. VPN has become more easily available since 2012, with local firms ViewQwest and MyRepublic bundling the service with their fibre broadband plans.
