its called Amazon GO. You don't order anything online, you just go into the shop with your phone app on and pick stuff off the shelf and just go off without waiting to pay. Looks like the future of shopping to me, if they can make it work. Looks like a sheng shiong/ntuc

No need to keep your fingers crossed. When amazon comes to singapore confirm shengshiong and ntuc will struggle and be impacted, their survival will depend how fast they can adapt the new technology to their stores.
Virtual currencies are worth virtually nothing.

But one very important point to add, it should benefit consumers like us. The presence of Amazon will take away some market share whether you like it or not.

Just like i think it is unnecessary to have a 4th telco, i wouldnt mind the lower monthly handphone bill. Consumers benefit when companies fight for market share

"While the first Amazon Go store is in the US and is at the moment only available to employees of the company, the first stores open to the public will be unleashed in 2017."

"And if you’re still not convinced, here’s the kicker—because there will no longer be the need to employ as many retail staff, businesses are going to save an estimated 15%–which can then be passed on to customers"

"Retailers must adapt or die"

NTUC is catching up to Amazon Go Store but limited to store in Bukit Timah. Sheng Siong has its own unique solution.

Cold Storage is using the "typical" self-checkout method, which might be matching with its customer segment

Self-checkout counters catch on at supermarkets

There is a lot of fluff out there about supermarkets. Here's what I know since I have worked closely with supermarket chains. It's a great business but barriers to entry have increased many fold as the bigger guys protect their market share and sign agreements with suppliers and get priority over certain locations/products. It is a much tougher nut to crack now.

1. Online grocery is in infancy. It is not currently still not a profitable business, long way off to profitability. Margins are too low to cover logistics, individual deliveries made to each house.

2. The condition for it to be successful is mass adoption(maybe by then will be mildly profitable) or only catering bulk buyers(business consumers).

3. Mass adoption online grocery seems difficult, there are too many mini marts/convenience store and supermarkets/etc scattered all over singapore. I.e. About 800 7-11s alone.

4. It is far easier and faster to go to the nearest supermarket and minimart to get groceries than order online. Online orders make sense in only specific locations.(i.e. sentosa)

5. Rather than going online, a more rewarding strategy is to improve efficiency and getting the right sized shops at the right locations which all the major supermarkets are doing now with self service kiosk.

6. Amazon Go is a brilliant idea but implementation requires huge investments. Unless the technology becomes more affordable, it is still many many years away before we see a full self service supermarket. Running a super market is still a very manual task even if there are no cashiers.

u know what? Big Grin

i just want to walk in, grab a trolley, load what i want, and walk out.... supposedly RFID & EZLink/Visa Paywave card is enough liao... Big Grin

I would assume the stocking up is the same process, pallet roll in, load the items on the shelfs and pallet roll out..

based on what i see in the Jurong Regional Library RFID Return System and the SBS bus i took,

I supposedly that same RFID & my EZLink/Visa Paywave card is enough technology liao... Big Grin

Linked to a Inventory system which auto-trigger the stock-low, top up stock function to the store's vendors..

I think it's very fleasible and not expensive!! Big Grin

No need people to man the store, just CCTVs enough... Tongue

RFID is possible,
but for the low value products which moves in volume, it is not feasible just yet.
A can of soda for example, adding a RFID tag would reduce its profitability significantly.
And who's going to tag it? Supplier or in house? If in house, it is an additional process/cost.

The amount of theft that occurs without proper loss control would need to be considered.
What about fresh food? Someone has to be there to check on its condition.
What I am saying is that are technologies aimed at improving efficiency but the operating costs is not going to come down
significantly anytime soon. And you need plenty of people to manage it even if you have a fully automated check-out.

A 24hr landromat is probably very much closer to a fully automated operation.

I also visted the 24hr meals vending store at Sengkang.
There is still a hotline to call if there is a technical problem, so even though there is no one at the shop,
there is still someone working somewhere to tend to the technical issues. Would make sense if there are multiple outlets.

Headlines are always seeking to attract attention. We need to understand what's behind the hype.
Much like 3D printing and .com is going to take over the world(in 2000).

I doubt Amazon Pay make sense in Asia region or wide spread in America. Many people can just walk out without paying especially when we have so many immigrants on work permits. It only make sense in closed community of certain level of attainment standard of living.

Did u actually watch the video how Amazon Pay works? U have to tap yr phone before u are allowed entry into the supermart. Whatever u take off the shelve it will reflect on an app in yr phone.
