Chemicals needed for project

Hi everyone,

I have a cousin who urgently needs like 20ml of ethanol and 20ml of hexane to run some chemistry chromatography test for a school project. Does anyone know where to purchase these in singapore or does anyone have some to sell?

What grade is your cousin in? (Uni, JC, Poly, secondary?)

How pure do you want your ethanol/hexane to be?

Common sources:
Not sure if there are common source for hexane.
Ethanol can be found in some nail polish remover and DIY/Hardware store for mixing paint etc.

Tech grade:
An easy way to get tech grade ethanol and hexane seems to be ebay, just not sure if there are any shipping or legal issue.

GC grade and higher:
Sigma Aldrich is a well known supplier of high grade solvents for research institutes in Singapore.

Thanks for the reply wildreamz. I would ask my cousin to check out the ethanol at the DIY stores.

My cousin is in jc. He has tried sigma aldrich but it seems like sigma would only sell to schools and eductional institutions, not to individuals. (how true, i am not too sure...)

He just wants to get the project done quickly so i think tech grade should be fine. Are there any shops in singapore that sell hexane directly? All he needs is just some small quantities.

Some JC chemistry lab may have hexane, your cousin may wish to seek his/her teacher chemistry teacher's advice on this, regardless they have it or not, as they usually have the resources to obtain it.

If you have friends or colleague that work/study in Uni/Poly Chemistry related course, you can seek their help (they should have plenty in their lab).

I am not aware of any common sources of hexane, besides ebay apparently and some Chinese suppliers. However, not sure about the legal issues, please verify yourself.

Since your cousin is not professionally trained, ask him/her to read up the Material Safety Data Sheet in detail, before proceeding with any experiment. I don't want to responsible for any accidents!

These chems you looking for are probably controlled items but I googled around hexane can be found on amazon or ebay not sure if they will pass customs.

for ethanol I was going to suggest cook up some rice brew ferment with yeast for a week then try to distill but there's a law which only allows distilling beverages with a license for brewing alcohol for own consumption in sg no license is required.

of course SAF rule number 1 applies too.

Or can try looking around bras basah complex lots of craft shops there lots of students go there too I guess they are getting lab materials from the same places.
